Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder that causes the destruction of pigmentation cells, i.e. melanocytes. This results in white patches of skin on different parts of the body. This can also appear on the eyes, mouth and nose too. This disorder also causes the hair that grows in those areas to be white. For young people, Vitiligo is a worrying disorder as it takes away the enjoyment of their youth. While the cause of Vitiligo is not known, there are some treatments available for minimizing its effect.
A combination of drugs and light therapy can be used to restore the pigmentation in the skin. Corticosteroid cream is used to stimulate the production of melanin. This is particularly effective during the early stages of the disease. This is an easy and effective treatment with some side effects such as skin thinning or appearance of lines or streaks in your skin. An alternative method is to use ointments such as tacrolimus that can restore pigments. This does not have any side effects and can be used in combination with UV light therapy.
Surgical methods such as suction blister epidermal grafting are used for stable and resistant Vitiligo. This is used for important areas such as the face. We at Dr. Ritu’s skin'n' Laser clinic take into account the individual needs of the patient and then suggest treatments accordingly. We also provide psychological therapy to the patients to revive their self-confidence.
